小満会 Shōman-e / May 9, Tokyo
Shōman is part of the traditional Japanese calendar of 24 seasons, which reflect the subtle shifts in nature throughout the year.
Shōman marks the time when all living things grow with vibrant energy, and the seeds planted in autumn begin to bear fruit - a gentle sense of happiness as new life begins to flourish.
With appreciation for the vibrant life of the season, we are delighted to host the Shōman Gathering at Zuishō‑ji Temple in Shirokanedai, a historic Zen temple in Tokyo.
Even in the midst of busy days, we warmly look forward to welcoming you and sharing this beautiful moment of early summer together.
※About 紫雲山 瑞聖寺 / Shiunzan Zuisho-ji Temple
Zuisho-ji Temple (Minato-ku, Tokyo) is the first temple in Tokyo of the Obaku Sect.
The building, listed in 1992 as jubun or Important Cultural Property in Japan, has features of traditional Chinese architecture like the deep eaves or the emphatic axis.
To commemorate the 350 years since the foundation of the Zuisho-Ji Temple, Kengo Kuma was asked to renovate the temple and the priests’ quarters within the temple.
The new addition was planned in consideration of the peculiar arrangement of the Chinese temple architecture.
